Poor man’s tilt-shift lens effect

I vaguely recalled a post made by Jason Kottke back earlier last year where he mentioned a photographer who took these really cool pictures of cities from a helicopter using a tilt-shift lens. The lens basically turns the cityscape in such a way that the area outside of the main focus is softened, while the focal point of the picture is brought out in super-sharp relief. In a nutshell, it made the cityscape look like a miniature diorama.

I thought I’d mention this cool effect since I found a Photoshop tutorial that allows you to create the same effect, without you having to drop a large chunk of change to buy a tilt-shift lens. 🙂
